June 12th, 2008. This was the most amazing sunset I have EVER seen! I took this looking toward Leavenworth, Kansas. No color or alterations to this shot at all. There were some incredible storms in the area and I shot lightning not long after this. Notice the mammatus clouds!

"LIGHTNING MAN" was the name given to this photo by my wife. When I got home after 5 hours of chasing storms, she told me this looked like a stick figure looking down at the earth. I would have never noticed!

This was my first shot of lightning from the night of July 14th, 2007. I took this in a chigger infested field in Olathe, Kansas. I had about 75 bites on me this day, about the same number of lightning shots too! Was it worth it? YES!

UFO OR CLOUD? I will never forget this early morning storm. I left my house around 7:00 p.m. and took photos off and on for almost eight hours! I got a call from my wife while standing in a field shooting this storm. She asked if I had planned on coming home before work. When I asked her what time it was she said 3:30 a.m.! Time flies when you're having fun! I was two hours from home and had to be to work at 8:00!

I am originally from the great scenic state of Utah. I have to admit I miss the mountains, Moab, Arches, Zion, Capital reef, Bryce, Lake Powell, Alta and well you get the point! Even with it being so flat out here there is so much beauty in the simple things. I have grown to appreciate what Kansas and Missouri have to offer!

This shot was taken on October 13th,2007 in Kansas City,Kansas in the Lakeside race-track parking lot. The clouds were so wicked looking with this storm! I stayed and took as many shots as I could before the rains came. I wanted to capture the underside of the clouds as the lightning lit them up. I felt lucky with this shot as two shots later my back-up battery was dead after an all night chase! I have since bought a charger for my vehicle!

Taken August 21st,2007 in Maryville,Missouri. This was a frustrating storm to watch. I drove around awhile trying to find a good place to shoot without trees or power lines in my view! I missed out on some incredible strikes. I now take notes when I'm out doing various things and make a list of great viewing areas for future storms!

Taken on June 22nd in Bucyrus,Kansas. I set the alarm for 3:00 a.m. to check doppler and this was a very small storm cell but I decided to get out anyway. I'm glad I did! Almost all of my shots were with lightning going across the sky. I only had one shot with a strike hitting the ground.

This shot was taken at the Squaw creek bird refuge in Mound City,Missouri on April 20th, 2008. I always enjoy this place. There is such a variety of birds and animals to see.

This shot was taken early a.m. on June 4th,2008 in Leawood,Kansas. It was pouring the whole time I shot this evening. I took the van, opened the sliding door, and shot from inside! Vans are great for photographing while it's raining, as long as the carpet dries-out before the wife drives it the next day!

This is my favorite too. See the power lines to the right. This strike got them humming. extremely wild. someone asked me "how you get the purple in this picture"? I don't know, might have to ask mother nature on that one. The lightning was all around me. I saw some right above me. I pointed the camera upward with a 4s exposure and just as I let my finger off the shutter button, this happened.

This was taken from Polo, Missouri looking north on June 4th, 2009. There was some incredible lightning with the storms this evening. Missouri is very challenging to shoot in with all the trees and hills. I was ready to give up on this storm when I drove south of Polo to find this open field.

Mexican Border
This "blue" thunderstorm was captured after dark just over the Texas/Mexico border. It is rare when chasing takes me this far south, but tornadic thunderstorms are probably common in northern Mexico, but the Mexican government does not have the resources to have as impressive nor organized a weather service to help issue watches and warnings in this area. The color of the bolt has not been altered. May 28, 2002; 13 seconds at f/8.

I had to slam on the brakes of my truck when I saw this image coming together just north of Florence, AZ on Saturday afternoon. We were out shooting weather and this formed up in front of me, really was a right place at the right time sort of deal.
It is a 9 image HDR captured with a Nikon D200 using the 18-200 lens. Tone mapping was done in Photomatix Pro and touch up was done in CS5.

September 18th, 2010 at Perry Lake, Kansas. This ominous looking storm rolled through in the afternoon prompting a tornado warning. The wall cloud rotation was incredible to see at such a scenic place! While shooting at this location, there were 5-6 strikes that hit within 100 yards of my truck! The sound was incredible! Definitely a great chase day!
