Domain Age: How Important Is It for SEO?

While the patent does sound rather straightforward (by the way its official version is no longer available online, so it might have been deleted), domain age factor is both overestimated and misinterpreted. My point is simple: domain registration date cannot speak for either quality or trustworthiness of a website as:

* domains can be registered but never used for a long time (parked);
* new domains can be used for highly established companies (with the old domain 301-redirecting to the new one);
* a domain name can be used for illegitimate purposes for years and then sold to a good person/ company without any change of the initial registration date.

Apache's Allow/Deny; Overhead of using Hostnames

Recently Ive identified a source of webpage requests I would like to block altogether. I have a range of IP addresses that I could block, but it appears this range has changed at least once in the last 2 years. Furthermore, I believe there are multiple ranges of IP addresses for different but similar services which all resolve to sub-domains of one main domain.

One option is to find all IP address ranges associated with this domain, and block them specifically. This seems like a daunting task.
The other option is to add the host name with the Deny directive. According to the Apache manual page for the Allow / Deny Directives though, this will result in a double reverse DNS lookup regardless of the HostNameLookups setting.

This seems to mean each request to the server will result in two lookups being performed for every visitor. As an educated guess, I would think that this lookup would be cached for at least the length of KeepAliveTimeout, if not the length of a timeout directive designed specifically for this functionality.

From here I also start to wonder, if a clients address results are cached, how much is cached? Does it cache the association for that one address, or does it cache the entire range(s) associated with the domain name and perform a check within that range before making a lookup outside of the cache.

WHOIS 503: Unable to service request due to high volume

Has anyone been getting an unusually high number of "ERROR 503: Unable to service request due to high volume." messages from WHOIS queries lately? I first started seeing this error a few days ago when I was using a forums WHOIS button. I figured that since Im not the only person who can use that button maybe a lot of us were using it at the same time and the WHOIS server was telling us to slow down, so I forgot about it. Ive been getting the same message today, from different locations though.

Are the servers which process WHOIS queries under attack; Have they been forced to cut back costs and got rid of hardware; Is there something getting ready to happen that has everyone WHOISing like theres no tomorrow ?

Screenshots With Highlighted Areas

Normally when I need to take a screenshot and highlight something in it I press "print screen" (prnt scrn) on my keyboard, open the image in my editor, and highlight the areas of interest using whichever effect I have on my mind at the moment. There has to be an easier way though.

Are there any applications available with a sort of pre-screenshot annotation mode ?

Im thinking of a small toolbox window, similar to the way some color pickers (for instance Colorpix) have their own small window. The window would have one main button that when clicked would "freeze" the screen while excluding the screenshot programs window. The screenshot toolbox window could still be moved around the screen, but the rest of the screen would be an un-interactive image of itself.

While the screen is frozen like this, simple drawing tools such as an oval or rectangle shape could be used to mark off sections to highlight. Once I was done highlighting areas the screen would go back to normal and a preview of my screenshot would open in a small window where I could preview different effects, such as blurring the areas outside of the highlighted areas, semi-transparent colored layers blacking out the non-highlighted areas, and maybe some others.

Once I was happy with that, I could save the screenshot as a PNG, JPG, GIF, etc.

Maybe as an optional security feature, it would include text recognition software and point out anything that looks like say, a credit card number, a sensitive URL, or other privacy concerns before actually saving the image and giving me the option to completely black those out. I cant be the only person who has realized only after posting a screenshot somewhere that it includes something it shouldnt.
